Stability & Preservative Testing
Why testing matters, what each type actually proves, and when you genuinely need it.
Why This Isn't Optional Guesswork
A formula that looks and smells fine on day one can separate, discolour, or lose potency within weeks - or worse, become a genuine microbial safety risk. Testing exists to catch these problems in a lab, before they happen in a customer's bathroom.
This matters most for any product with a water phase - water-containing formulas are exactly what bacteria, yeast, and mould need to grow, which is why they require a validated preservative system, not just "a preservative" added on faith.
Do You Always Need Both?
Not necessarily. An anhydrous (oil/wax-only, no water) balm has a much lower microbial risk than a water-based cream, so PET may be less critical there - though freeze/thaw stability still matters for texture and separation.
A general rule: the more water-based and the more sensitive the actives (Vitamin C, certain peptides, botanical extracts), the more testing genuinely matters - both for your own confidence in the product and for defending any shelf-life or stability claim you make.
A Quick Practical Checklist
Before you commit to a full production run, ask your manufacturer:
1. Has this formula (or one very similar) already been through PET and stability testing, or would this be the first time?
2. What's the actual preservative system, and is it validated for this specific formula's pH and water content?
3. What shelf-life claim can honestly be made based on the testing that's been done?
